my shirts all shrunk is a whimsical dance theater work that is rooted in the belief that style is inseparable from identity - that what we wear, how we move, and the choices we make are expressions of who we are and who we’re becoming. The title speaks to the experience of squeezing into a shirt, an identity, or a container that was never designed for you. As we grow into ourselves, the spaces meant to contain us become too small, revealing a need for something larger, something that allows us to fully inhabit the space we deserve. The piece centers an all-queer cast/creative team and explores the desire to stand out, the fantasy of becoming the next version of yourself, and the power of self-presentation as a form of self-knowledge. It examines what it means to “dress queer,” not as a single aesthetic, but as an ever-evolving expression of identity, resistance, joy, and possibility.
This project was made possible by the Boston Center for the Arts Dance Lab Residency, the NEFA Dance Fund, and individual donors. Stay tuned for details on its expansion!
